AUO and Smartkem Join Forces to Develop Rollable Transparent MicroLED Display
In a significant move within the display technology sector, UK-based OTFT developer Smartkem has partnered with AUO to jointly develop rollable transparent MicroLED display. The collaboration is set to leverage Smartkem's OTFT backplane technology, with the project based on a novel OTFT production process developed at ITRI.

Smartkem is confident that its technology will not only enable the creation of high-end rollable transparent MicroLED display but will also lead to a drastic reduction in costs, potentially bringing prices down to mass market levels. The company's low-temperature processing allows for the use of low-cost and flexible plastic substrates instead of glass, which is seen as a crucial factor in reducing production costs.

A few months ago, Smartkem made headlines by demonstrating its first MicroLED display, which was produced using its own proprietary OTFT materials. The display featured a sapphire wafer with arrays of 96x96 MicroLEDs, each measuring 18um x 25um and produced by Enkris.

AUO, on the other hand, has been making significant progress in MicroLED technology. The company is transitioning to a 4.5-Gen production line and has stated that MicroLED is a top priority. AUO believes it is at the forefront of MicroLED development and has been actively investing in the technology.
Towards the end of 2023, AUO announced plans to further invest in its MicroLED technologies. The company aimed to mass produce MicroLED smartwatch display by the end of that year and also had plans to introduce automotive and TV display. In November 2023, AUO reached an agreement with PlayNitride to build a $21.5 million 6-inch epiwafer MicroLED production line at its Longtan factory. In May 2024, AUO showcased its latest MicroLED display prototypes at SID Displayweek 2024.

This partnership between Smartkem and AUO holds great promise for the future of rollable transparent MicroLED display, potentially revolutionizing the display market with more affordable and innovative products.
